Doing the measurements
Doing the measurements
I am a fan of EcoTeams and think it is an imaginative way to bring people together, build a sense of community and work together to reduce carbon emissions. However I have found the measurements part a bit tricky. When I introduced the concept at my first session, there was some resistance and this affected the whole mood of the session. So I decided it was better for people to come along to the sessions, not do the measurements but be encouraged to make behaviour changes than for them to stop coming. (Sadly 3 people did drop out after the first session.) I said that measurements were optional and I would not be reminding my team about them. I am doing the measurements myself but am not sure if anyone else is. I do fully appreciate why EcoTeams need the results (and they are already aware of my views). I would encourage you to take an approach which will work for you and your team. I have measured my carbon footprint with an online carbon footprint calculator and found this a far more useful exercise than standing on the scales with rubbish bags each week. It is quick to do, you get an immediate result, it is more accurate (use gas bills etc from last 12months) and you can compare yourself with the national average. So why not give it a go? Best wishes and good luck! Christine.
