Travel session hints and tips

Hi! I was impressed that three neighbours put on hiking boots and trudged through inches of snow (in a typical London suburban street) to join me for the Travel session. Thanks again to ecoteams for more interesting facts, practical suggestions and excellent web links.I did the Travel mix’n’match but gave 3 possible multiple choice answers for each questions. It works best if the answers or all very different in scale as it makes people really think. (Q6 was not clear. What is the time period this is measured over, eg one week or a year? People did not really understand Q3). There were more people than quiz prizes which went down well! I chose “green” things eg re-usable cloth bag, clementines (healthy eating, supermarket will recycle the netting bag), Fairtrade nuts and a Father Xmas hat (because ecoteams is fun!). We talked about the actions people can take regarding travel – people were interested in the smarter driver tips.  I then did the Rubbish and Shopping footprint task. People did this individually. I did not gather scores but mentioned that scores would be in the range 1.3 to 6 planets. I suggested they kept their answers and repeated in 6 or 12 months time. This led nicely onto “how to measure your carbon footprint using an online carbon calculator” and included my own personal results to bring the figures to life. (I did not have time to do the former in the Rubbish and Shopping session and a neighbour had specifically asked about carbon footprints so I put something together.)  I now have more idea of what will work with my group and how long things will take. Sounds obvious but things take longer if size of group is bigger. I like to have activities for people to do in groups of 2 or 3 rather than all group chat. I guess I have also developed my skills in planning and running an ecoteam. You will too! After the session I circulated the handout I had prepared (on travel and measuring your carbon footprint) to the 16 people on my street mailing list. Good luck for your travel session.Best wishes from Christine.
